Obtaining Spanish Nationality: Law of Democratic Memory

On October 19, 2022, the Spanish Parliament passed Law 20/2022 on Democratic Memory to allow applicants who meet the following criteria to apply for Spanish nationality.

This law applies to people born outside Spain to a father or mother, grandfather or grandmother, who were originally Spanish.

It also applies to persons born outside Spain to a father or mother, grandfather or grandmother, originally Spanish, who, having been forced into exile for political, ideological, religious or sexual orientation and identity reasons, have lost or renounced their Spanish nationality.

However, it will be necessary to act as soon as possible, since eligible persons have two years from October 21, 2022 to prepare their application and submit it to the competent Spanish authorities.
